Who Are the Biggest XRP Holders? Understanding the XRP Rich List

A "rich list" — a ranking of the largest accounts on a blockchain by balance — sounds like it should tell you who the biggest individual investors are. For XRP, like most cryptocurrencies, that's mostly not what it actually shows. Understanding what the largest accounts really are makes the whole rich list a lot more useful to look at.

What the largest accounts usually are

When you look at the top of a token's rich list, the accounts you typically find are:

Genuine large individual holders ("whales" in the retail-investor sense) do exist, but they're often mixed in with — and can be hard to distinguish from — these institutional and custodial addresses just by looking at balance alone.

Rather than take our word for which accounts are largest, see the actual current ranking.

Why this is checkable at all

This is possible to verify because the XRP Ledger, like essentially every public blockchain, is fully transparent: every account's balance is visible to anyone who looks it up, with no special access required. That's a very different privacy model from a bank account, where balances are private by default. See Is My XRP Address Public? for more on what that transparency does and doesn't mean for your own privacy.

How to read a rich list responsibly

A few practical points if you're looking at rich-list data (including our own Rich List tool):

What it's actually useful for

Despite those caveats, a rich list is genuinely useful for understanding the broad distribution of an asset — how concentrated or spread out the holdings are, roughly how much is sitting in known exchange or escrow wallets versus elsewhere, and as a starting point if you want to look up a specific address's history yourself.

For the mechanics behind why every account's balance is visible in the first place, see Is My XRP Address Public?. For more on Ripple's own large XRP holdings specifically, see What Is Ripple (the Company) and How Is It Different From XRP (the Token)?.
