The History of the XRP Ledger: From 2012 to Today

XRP and the XRP Ledger have a longer history than a lot of newer entrants to crypto, and the story spans well over a decade. This is a broad-strokes overview — for depth on any specific era, see the linked guides below.

The 2012 launch

The XRP Ledger launched in 2012, created by a small group of developers. The entire 100 billion XRP supply was created at the ledger's genesis — there's no ongoing mining process the way Bitcoin gradually issues new coins. Some of the ledger's original creators later became associated with the company that would go on to be known as Ripple, which is part of why the relationship between "Ripple the company" and "XRP the asset" is often misunderstood — see our dedicated guide on that distinction for more.

The early years

In its earlier years, XRP traded at a small fraction of a cent, and the XRP Ledger's ecosystem of exchanges, wallets, and integrations was much smaller than it is today. See our year-by-year price history for more detail on this period.

The 2017–2018 boom and bust

Like most of the crypto market, XRP saw an enormous run-up in late 2017 into early 2018, reaching its widely-cited all-time high around $3.84 in January 2018 (see our All-Time High Tracker), followed by a multi-year bear market alongside the rest of crypto.

The SEC lawsuit era

Starting in December 2020, Ripple Labs faced a lawsuit from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission over whether its XRP sales constituted unregistered securities offerings — a case that shaped a lot of the XRP conversation for the following several years, including exchange delistings and relistings tied to regulatory uncertainty in the US specifically. See our dedicated Ripple v. SEC explainer for the details, including why we deliberately don't state a specific final resolution figure or date in a general history article like this one.

More recent developments

In the years since, the XRP Ledger's ecosystem has continued to develop — including things like Ripple's own RLUSD stablecoin, continued growth of the ledger's built-in decentralized exchange, and Ripple's ongoing work in areas like cross-border payments (ODL) and CBDC-related pilots. These are active, evolving areas rather than settled history, so we cover them in their own dedicated, appropriately-hedged guides rather than asserting a fixed "current state" here.

Why this matters for understanding XRP today

A lot of confusion about XRP comes from conflating different eras or different entities — treating something true about "Ripple the company in 2024" as if it were true about "the XRP Ledger in 2012," for instance. Keeping the timeline straight helps make sense of why certain claims (about regulation, about exchange availability, about specific products) were true at one point and aren't necessarily true, or complete, today.
